Explore the Serbian Culture On this page you will find a lot of information about Serbian culture. You will learn about the languages, religion, food, and music just to name a few. I have also included some personal stories on this page for you, because I am part Serbian. I have been to many events with my family that included some form of the Serbian culture, and I also have many cousins that participate in some Serbian cultural events on a regular basis.
Language: Serbian- originated from the Southwestern Slovac languages.
Serbian is the official language of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro (Wikipedia, 2011)
Religion: Serbian Orthodox

St. Sava Cathedral is the Cathedral of the Orthodox Churces in Serbia.
Food
Sarma- Sour Cabbage Rolls
Sarma is a dish that many of my family memeber make for different Holidays. It is made of sour cabbage, mixed meats and bacon.
Lamb Roast
Every year for the Holidays during the warm months my family likes to roast a lamb. For St. George in May we roast a lamb at my uncle's house, and for Labor Day in September we roast a lamb at my Grandpa's house.

In 2011 New Year's Day was celebrated on Februrary 1st, while in 2012 New Year's Day will be celebrated on January 1st.
Just like Christianity, Orthodox celebrate Easter on a different day each year. This coming year Good Friday will be celebrated on April 13th, and Easter will be celebrated on April 15th.
Some holiday's that are celebrated on the same day each year are:
St. Sava's day- January 27th
Constitution Day- Februrary 15th
Victory Day- May 9th

Music and Dance Many of my cousins participate in a dance team that goes to folk dance competitions and performs at many church events.
Folk Music Instruments
The instrument to the left is called a Tambura. This instrument is something that is played in folk bands. Three of my cousins play the tambura in the Tambura band at St. George Serbian Church in Joliet.
